MINSTRY OF FISHERIES AND MARINE RESOURCES (MFMR)
The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources promotes responsible and sustainable management, and conservation of fisheries resources of Sierra Leone. The Ministry is mandated to provide affordable animal protein for the population by establishing livelihood enhancement programmes for fishing communities, supporting, monitoring, and surveillance of the waters to minimize overfishing.
MISSION
The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources has its mission to plan, develop, rationally manage and conserve all living aquatic resources for the country's benefit. To achieve this, the ministry promotes good governance, including co-management practices, establishes sustainable monitoring, control, and surveillance procedures, establishes the livelihood enhancement of the fishing communities, supports commercial fisheries development, increases the contribution of the fish resources to the national economy, adhere to and actively participate in regional and internal fisheries management organization and adopt best practices in the management of the resources, including code of conduct for responsible fisheries.
VISION
The Fisheries Sector Policy is to promote responsible and sustainable fishing practices through good governance while contributing to poverty reduction and wealth creation in Sierra Leone. The policy envisages significant contribution by the sector to social welfare in an equitable manner, sustainable economic growth and wealth generated through the environmentally sound and prudent exploitation of the nation’s fish resources.
The Minister is the political head of the Ministry and is assisted by a deputy Minister. The administrative head is the Permanent Secretary and the Director of Fisheries is the Technical head of the Ministry. The Ministry has the following departments: Monitoring, Control and Surveillance; Statistics and Research; Marine Artisanal Fishing; Inland and Aquaculture Fishing; Fish Safety and Quality Assurance; Competent Authority for Fish and Fisheries Product.
