BONTHE DISTRICT
Bonthe District is in the southern province and comprises of several islands. The town lies on the eastern shore of Sherbro Island, on the Sherbro River estuary. Bonthe is about 60 miles south-west of Bo. On the South-East of Bonthe is Pujehun and Moyamba to the North-West. Mattru Jong is the district headquarter town which is on the main land.
Councils: There are two local councils in the district, Bonthe Municipal Council situated in Bonthe Island and the Bonthe District Council situated in the mainland of Mattru Jong.
The Mayor is head of the municipal council and a Chairperson is the head of the District Council. The municipal Council has 13 elected councillors serving ward committees. The District Council has 18 elected councillors and 18 ward Committees; they are Wards 306 to 326.
Chiefdoms: The district has 11 chiefdoms administered by Paramount Chiefs as follows: Bendu; Bum; Dema; Imperri; Jong; Kpanda; Kwamebai Krim; Nongoba Bullom; Sittia; Sogbini; and Yawbeko.
Constituencies: Bonthe District has 4 Constituencies represented by members of Parliament ranging from Constituency 089 to 092.
Ethnicity: Bonthe district is largely made up of two main ethnic groups: The Sherbros and the Mendes accounting for an estimated 80 percent of the population in the district. The other minorities tribes the Themnes and Fullahs.
Economic Activity: The major economic activities include fishing along the Atlantic Ocean and agricultural production in Rice and Palm oil.
Education: Bonthe district has 321 Schools: 43 Pre-primary Schools; 234 Primary Schools; 32 Junior Secondary Schools and 12 Senior Secondary Schools.
