PORT LOKO DISTRICT
Port Loko District is in the north western region of Sierra Leone and borders the Atlantic Ocean on the North West, Western Area to the southwest, Kambia District to the north, Bombali District to the east and Tonkolili District to the south. Port Loko town is the district headquarter town which links Freetown to the far east as well as to the international airport at lungi. Port Loko District is the regional headquarters for north-west region and Port Loko City is the district headquarters.
Councils: Port Loko has two Local Councils the Port Loko District Council and the Port Loko City Council each of which is led by a Chairperson and Mayor respectively. Port Loko District Council has a total of 28 councillors each heading a ward committee and 13 elected councillors for the City Council.
Ethnicity: The population of Port Loko is not as diverse compared to other parts of the country. The Temne is the largest ethnic group, and the Temne language along with the Krio language are widely spoken.
Chiefdoms: Port Loko district has eleven (11) Chiefdoms superintended by Paramount Chiefs as follows: Bureh Kaseh; Buya Romende; Debia; Kaffu Bullom; Loko Massama; Maforki; Marampa; Masimera; Koya; Sanda Magbolontor; T.M. Safroko
Economic Activities: The district's main economic activities include small scale mining and farming (rice, cassava, and sweet potato).
Constituencies: Port Port Loko District had 11 Constituencies ranging from Constituency 068 to 090.
Education: Port Loko district has 853 schools, of which 94 are pre-primary, 552 are primary, 162 are junior secondary, and 45 are senior secondary schools. The district also has the Port Loko Teacher's College.
