MINSTRY OF ENVIRONMENT AND CLIMATE CHANGE (MOECC)

 

The Ministry of Environment was established in 2019 with the mandate to formulate and facilitate the implementation of appropriate policies and programmes for sustainable management of the Environment.

 

Mission:

To manage the environment in a sustainable manner by formulating and implementation of the appropriate policies and programme for the management and preservation of the Environment in Sierra Leone.

 

Vision:

To achieve a green economy status by 2030

 

Specific functions of the Ministry are:

  • Lead on the development and supervision of the legal and policy framework for building national environmental resilience as it relates to climate change, natural resources management, including forestry and wetlands conservation.

  • Ensure effective disaster management and governance

  • Supervise government agencies addressing different environmental issues: Environment Protection Agency, Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Authority, Sierra Leone Meteorological Agency, National Protected Area Authority and Conservation Trust Fund, Forestry and Wildlife Department.

  • Ensure environmental compliance and enforcement of environmental laws and regulations through the Environment Protection Agency (EPA)

  • Relations with national and international organizations dealing with environmental issues.

  • Mobilization of resources in support of the strengthening environmental resilience.

  • Collaborate with all relevant MDAs working on environmental related issues
