MINSTRY OF FORIEGN AFFAIRS AND INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION (MFAIC)
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Sierra Leone was established on the attainment of independence in 1961 to conduct the country’s relations with other countries. Since then, the Ministry has continued to pursue the country's foreign policy objectives as spelt out in Chapter 2, Section 10 of the 1991 Constitution of the Republic of Sierra Leone.
The Ministry’s mandate is to provide the requisite platform to develop policies and programmes aimed at externalizing the country’s national development aspirations as well as the pursuit of the national interest through conducting state diplomacy including the establishment of friendly relations and negotiations at the bilateral and multilateral levels. It also coordinates and concludes bilateral agreements and international treaties with other countries and inter-governmental organizations including international institutions for constructive outcomes and mutual benefits.
The Foreign Ministry conducts its mandate through its headquarters and overseas missions such as Embassies, High Commissions, Permanent Missions and Consulates. Its work includes the promotion of trade and investment opportunities, ensure that Sierra Leone plays its role in the management of global public goods and the benefits thereof, as well as contribute the maintenance of international peace, security and stability. It also provides consular services to Sierra Leoneans abroad as well as other nationals.
The Minister is the political leader of the Ministry assisted by a deputy Minister. The administrative head of the Ministry is the Director-General, assisted by two deputies one for General Operations and the other for Policy.
