MINSTRY OF SOCIAL WELFARE (MOSW)
The Ministry of Social Welfare was originally the Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affair but was separated to Ministry of Social Welfare and the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs in November, 2019.
The Ministry of Social Welfare, is one of the constituent Ministries of the Government of the Republic of Sierra Leone (GoSL) that is charged with the responsibility to lead in the development, implementation and monitoring of the policy and legislative frameworks for services to all person especially vulnerable groups; and responding to their social needs pertaining to social depravity – eg. Elderly, persons with disabilities, trafficked victims, vulnerable families, victims affected by disasters etc.; and promote Religious right among others in Sierra Leone.
VISION
To see a Sierra Leone where the rights of vulnerable and underprivileged persons of families are respected, including their equal access to available opportunities and appropriate services in communities.
MISSION
Empowering and transforming the lives of the vulnerable and underprivileged persons or families including young people, women, children, the elderly and persons with disabilities.
We do this through coordinated development and implementation of laws, policies and programmes that promote their welfare and safeguard their rights including religious tolerance.
The Ministry is headed by the Minister who is assisted by a Deputy Minister. Both of them are appointed by the President. The main objective of the Minister and the Deputy Minister is to drive and implement the President’s vision relating to Social welfare. The Permanent Secretary is the administrative head; the Chief Social Services Director is the professional head.
