LAW REFORM COMMISSION (LRC)
The Law Reform Commission is mandated to keep under review all laws both statutory and otherwise in Sierra Leone for the purpose of reform, development, consolidation and codification.
The Commission was established by the Law Reform Commission Act (1994) to review English law imported into the Sierra Leone legal system and adapt it to local circumstances and contemporary legal standards. The 1975 law also empowered the Commission to reform local statutes and indigenous customary law that appeared outdated.
The Commission is expected to harmonize and codified the laws of Sierra Leone into a single system of laws. Key departments are: The Research and Drafting Departments.
The Commission consist of a Board of Commissioners and a Secretariat. The board members are appointed by the President for a term of three years. The members of the board comprise of a Chairman, a judge from the superior courts nominated by the Chief Justice, a representative of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, two representatives of the Bar Association, the Director of Law School and a representative of the Faculty of Law, University of Sierra Leone.
