NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITY (NCPD)
The Disability Act establishes a National Commission for Persons with Disability (NCPD) to ensure the well-being of persons with disability (PWDs). It is the specialized government agency on disability-related matters, and its mandates are but not limited to the following:
- Engage in the policy formulation for the protection of PWDs.
- Collaborate with the government during the national census to ensure ‘that accurate figures of PWDs are documented
- Proffer means of ensuring that discrimination against PWDs is prevented.
- Investigate allegations of discrimination against PWDs.
- Awareness raising and advocacy for and on behalf of PWDs.
- Monitored all disability programs
- Produce reports on its investigation; implement programmes aimed at employment or income generation for PWDs.
- Liaise with all Stakeholders that implement programmes relating to PWDs
The Board of the National Commission for Persons with Disability comprises a Chairperson, the Executive Secretary, representatives from government Ministries of (Social Welfare, Finance, Youth, Sports, Health, Education, Labour, Transport, Tourism and Culture), four representatives of the Sierra Leone Union on Disability Issues and other Disabled Peoples’ Organisations ‘including at least one female’; two representatives from civil society handling disability issues and an Executive Secretary.
