LogoPOLITICAL PARTIES REGISTRATION COMMISSION (PPRC)

 

Noting the recent violent past of Sierra Leone, and the need for continued peace; and given the desirability for a free, fair, peaceful and well-regulated election and the avoidance of political discord, as provided for by the Political Parties Act, 2002, which establishes the PPRC for the registration and regulation of the conduct of political parties in accordance with sections 34 and 35 of the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone.

 

The institutional mandate and independence of the PPRC are enshrined in the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone. The commission has launched the “MULTI-PARTY FORUM FOR PLOTICAL PARTY LEADERS” in the regional Headquarter towns and will roll-out the District Multi-Party Forum (DMPF) in the remaining regional electoral districts with the following objectives:

  1. To diffuse any tension that may arise out of Political Party activities at the local level;

  2. To build trust and solid understanding among the various Political Party activities and key actors in Governance;

  3. To prevent and mitigate electoral violence and conflict.

 

MANDATE OF PPRC

  1. Register and supervise the conduct of political parties in accordance with the 1991 Constitution and the Political Parties Act of 2002;

  2. Monitor the affairs or conduct of political parties to ensure compliance with the constitution of Sierra Leone, the Political Parties Act and the terms and conditions of their registration;

  3. Monitor the accountability of political parties to their membership and to the electorate of Sierra Leone;

  4. Promote political pluralism and spirit of constitutionalism among political parties;

  5. When approached by persons or parties concerned, to mediate any conflict or disputes between or among the leadership of any political party or between or among political parties;

  6. To do all such things as will contribute to the attainment of good conduct of political parties;

 

VISION

To ensure peaceful and long-term democratic political representation of the people of Sierra Leone through independent registration and balanced monitoring of political parties.

 

MISSION

The PPRC exists to engender among political parties in Sierra Leone; a spirit of accountable political pluralism as well as strong democratic principles in the political parties. The PPRC will provide a forum for conflict resolution and thus foster political reconciliation and national cohesion.
