EPA is an agency in the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change with a mandate to ensure adherence to environmental legislation and provides oversight over natural resources of Sierra Leone. The Agency safeguards and manages Sierra Leone's environment and resources, aiming to prevent pollution and establish a legacy for future generations. EPA plays a pivotal role in catalyzing green growth, enhancing social prosperity, and driving transformative development. Sierra Leone faces urgent issues like deforestation, unsustainable mining practices, and urban deterioration. EPA-SL has initiated bold interventions including policy enhancements, compliance measures, public awareness campaigns, and international collaboration. Despite constraints, EPA personnel remain committed to achieving visionary objectives outlined by the President.

 

VISION

The vision of the Environment Protection Agency Sierra Leone (EPA-SL) is to ensure the sustainable use of our natural resources and contribute to poverty reduction through effective protection and sound management of the environment.

 

MISSION

The Agency’s mission is to effectively protect, and sustainably manage the environment and its natural resources to ensure a quality environment adequate for human health and well-being for all Sierra Leoneans

 

MANDATE

The EPA was established in 2008 to safeguard the environment. In 2022, the EPA Act was replaced, enhancing the Agency's authority. The EPA aims to ensure a superior environment for all Sierra Leoneans. The Agency operates under a Board of Directors and an Executive Chairperson. The Minister of Environment provides policy direction and supervision. The EPA oversees all environmental matters in Sierra Leone. The Agency also advises the minister on environmental affairs.
