"The National Minerals Agency (NMA) is a regulatory Agency responsible for promoting the sustainable development of Sierra Leone’s minerals sector; collecting, managing and disseminating geo-scientific data and information; implementing mining laws and regulations; managing mineral rights; regulating the trading of minerals; and promoting the rights of mining communities.

The Agency was established in 2012 to ensure transparent and accountable management of the mineral sector which builds investor confidence to make long-term investments. The NMA is headed by a Board of Directors, and has six technical Directorates: the Director of Geological survey; the Directorate of Mines; the Directorate of Precious Minerals Trading; the Directorate of Communication and Community Affairs; the Directorate of Technology and Information Management; and the Directorate of Finance and Administration.

As part of its function, the Agency manages a fair, predictable and transparent mineral rights licencing system including monitoring and compliance, and oversees exploration and mining activities, ensuring that they are conducted in a responsible manner and comply with the laws and regulations of the country. The NMA also oversees a system of diamond trading that is consistent with the Kimberly Process Certification Scheme.

All matters relating to mining, including exploration and minerals trading and export are managed by the NMA.
