THE EUROPEAN UNION (EU)
The European Economic Community (EEC) was established by the Treaty of Rome of 1957 as a regional organisation that aimed to bring about economic integration among its member states and opened an office in Freetown Sierra Leone in 1976. Over the years, the EEC evolved into the European Union (EU) and continue to be a very supportive partner to the Government and people of Sierra Leone.
EU support is guided by the principles and objectives of the Cotonou Agreement between the European and the African Caribbean and Pacific States. Implementation of EU support Sierra Leone is coordinated by the National Authorizing Office (NAO) which currently sits within the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development.
Over the last 10 years, EU has provided an estimated $1.104 billion dollars to fund projects in Education, Health, Infrastructure (including Road network) Agriculture and promoting good and accountable Governance.
The EU is a member of the Multi-Donor Budget Support partners that provide direct budget support to the Government as well as project and technical support.
In 2022, the AfDB provided an estimated $34.57 million (€32.92 million), in grants for Sierra Leone.
