THE UNITED STATES AGENCY FOR INTENATIONAL DEVELOPMENT (USAID)
USAID has been operating in Sierra Leone since 1961, helping the country gain political stability, achieve food security and strengthen democratic governance through targeted assistance to sectors such as education, agriculture, and women empowerment.
USAID also played a pivotal role in bringing to an end the civil war that ravaged the country in the 1990s and early 2000s by providing humanitarian and emergency assistance, promoting reintegration and reconciliation, and supporting the implementation of the Lomé Peace Accord.
Following the Ebola outbreak in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone in 2014, USAID provided emergency support for the Ebola emergency response in Sierra Leone and also invested in the country’s post Ebola recovery. The Women Empowered for Leadership and Development (WELD) program for instance is increasing women’s political social and economic rights in Sierra Leone by creating an enabling environment for women’s participation in decision making, building the capacity of sub national entities and strengthening Civil Society to advocate for policies affecting women.
The USAID in 2022 provided an estimated $21.91 million in grants to support various projects in Sierra Leone.
