The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) was founded in 1945 as a specialized agency of the United Nations family.
The FAO in Sierra Leone
FAO has been operating in Sierra Leone since 1978, supporting the government in eliminating hunger, improving food security, and achieving sustainable agriculture through improved farming methods and the protection of the environment.
In line with the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) for Sierra Leone and the Medium-Term National Development Plan, FAO is currently supporting the Government to:
Increase productivity along the food system value chain
Improve livelihoods and nutrition outcomes through food and nutrition security and responsible agribusiness development
Improve governance and management of natural resources
Increase resilience of livelihoods to threats and crises and Support Social Protection interventions for vulnerable households and communities.
MANDATE
To end hunger and malnutrition across the globe through sustainable agriculture sustainably managing, preserving, and restoring natural resources and ecosystems.
To assist countries, raise levels of nutrition, improve agricultural productivity, and improve the lives of the rural population.
MISSION
To achieve food security for all and make sure that people have regular access to enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives.

OVERVIEW OF AID AGENDA TO SIERRA LEONE (PORTFOLIO SIZE AS AT 2021)
The Country Programming Framework (CPF) sets out four government priority areas to guide FAO partnership and support with the Government of Sierra Leone – bringing together innovative international best practices and global standards with national and regional expertise during four years from 2016 to 2019.
Within this CPF FAO Sierra Leone will align its programmes and projects to the three regional priority areas that were identified and agreed upon during the 28th FAO’s Regional Conference for Africa.
