UNITED NATIONS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME (UNDP)

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has been operating in Sierra Leone since 1965. The current UNDP Country Programme for Sierra Leone runs from 2020 to 2023 and focuses on enhancing the ability of state institutions to deliver services to citizens using a coordinated and sustainable approach in various areas including democratic institutions, sustainable environment, inclusive growth and assisting in the localization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The UNDP Country Program Document is the Agency’s contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF), jointly developed with the UN Country Team (UNCT) and the Government of Sierra Leone to support the implementation of the Medium-Term National Development Plan and to guide the achievement of the SDGs.

UNDP is based on the merging of the United Nations Expanded Programme of Technical Assistance, created in 1949, and the United Nations Special Fund, established in 1958.

Currently, the UNDP Sierra Leone work is concentrated around the following areas:-

- Sustainability and Inclusive Local Economic Development

- Governance

  • UNDP Sierra Leone supports a more accountable and efficient government, together with a public sector that delivers quality services, while advocating for reform and institutional capacity development in Sierra Leone. The interventions in the areas of Energy, Environment & Natural Resource Management in Sierra Leone focus on the nexus between poverty, lack of access to renewable energy, environmental degradation, and vulnerability to climate change impacts. The programme works to strengthen national and local capacities to manage the nation’s natural capital, including land, water, biodiversity, and mineral resources for the advancement of poverty reduction in an environmentally sustainable and socially equitable manner.

- UNDP support the Integrated National Financing Framework in Sierra Leone to improve financial policies and better understand the financial landscape. UNDP supported a development finance assessment to design this integrated financing framework.
