AVSI FOUNDATION SIERRA LEONE
AVSI’s mission in Sierra Leone has always been to improve the quality of the educational sector by involving teachers and parents. Since 2018, AVSI is improving primary teachers’ skills for schools, so that children could improve their reading and writing skills in English At the global level, AVSI Foundation operates in 39 countries implementing over 100 projects to improve the quality of the educational sector with the involvement of teachers and parents. In addition, AVSI support the capacity building of civil society organizations to enable them complement Government’s effort in educational sector development.
AVSI started operating in Sierra Leone towards the end of the 90s in partnership with the Family Homes Movement (FHM). The initial interventions focused on the reintegration of child soldiers as well as the creation of reception centers for orphans making it easy for them to be adopted by families. Currently AVSI collaborates with FHM, Fonda zone Giacomo Brodolini, Lattanzio Advisory and St Mary’s Home of Charity to implement programmes in Western Area Urban/Rural, Bombali, Tonkolili, Port Loko, Bo and Kenema in the following sectors, Education and Social Welfare.
