HELEN KELLER INTERNATIONAL
Helen Keller International (HKI) has been devoted to preventing blindness, malnutrition, and poverty around the world since 1915. HKI provides life changing healthcare to vulnerable families in places where the need is great, but the access is limited.
In Sierra Leone, where misconceptions about blindness are widespread, the organization, in partnership with local and national groups, is working to educate people about what causes blindness, and is also working to change people’s attitudes about blind people. HKI also provides support to female farmers to produce potatoes which is very nutritious as well as support clinics to offer weekly service to women who wants their children to get vaccinations, drugs, or general health screening.
Currently, HKI is providing books in Braille for blind schools they support and an interactive radio show that educates people on what causes blindness which is helping to reduce stigmas toward the blind.
