MEDICINES SANS FRONTIERES
SIERRA LEONE
Doctors without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) started operations in Sierra Leone in 1986. MSF doctors work in hospitals, primary health facilities, and in the community to increase access to health care, fill gaps in the provision of essential medicines, and help develop the country's health workforce.
Although the primary focus of MSF in Sierra Leone is on maternal and child health care, the organisation monitors the overall health situation across the country and offers medical and psychological care to victims of sexual violence, community-based malaria management sites as well as screening, treatment, and referrals.
Currently, MSF is supporting 13 primary health facilities in Gorama Mende, Wandor and Nongowa chiefdoms in Kenema district, providing clinical supervision and training, assisting with referrals, filling significant gaps in the supply of essential drugs and medical equipment, and conducting community outreach and health promotion activities.
