The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) operates under the Police Act No. 7 of 1964 as the national police force of the Republicof Sierra Leone with primacy over internal security. It is responsible for the protection of lives and properties and the enforcement of laws. The Ministry of Internal Affairs responsible for the internal safety and security of the state is the supervisory Ministry of the SLP.

Structure of the Sierra Leone Police

  • The Inspector General of Police (IGP) is Head and Chief Executive of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP). He is appointed by H.E. the President subject to the approval of Parliament. The IGP is the principal adviser to His Excellency the President, the Hon. Vice President, Minister of Internal Affairs, Police Council and the Government on all police-related matters at strategic, policy, administrative and operational levels for the internal security and safety of the state.
  • The IGP is assisted by the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) and acts in the capacity of the IGP when the substantive IGP is not available. There are 13 directorates each headed by a Director, Regional Police Command and 38 Local Command Units (divisions). The Directors have responsibilities over the following; Operations Support Division (OSD), Corporate Affairs, Human Resource Management, Crime Services, Support Services, Integrated Intelligence Service (IIS), Gender & Community Affairs, Training, Traffic Management & Road Safety, Infrastructure & Estate, Professional Standards and Medical Services.

 

The administrative seat of the SLP is Police Headquarters, George Street, Freetown which accommodates the IGP, DIGP and most of the Directors. The six Regional Police Commands cover the following Local Command Units/ Divisions:

Freetown West Region

  • Central, Congo Cross, Aberdeen, Lumley, Mountain and Goderich Divisions.

 

Freetown East Region

  • East-end Police, Harbour, Kissy, Grafton and Waterloo Divisions.

 

Southern Region

  • Bo-East, Bo-West, Moyamba, Pujehun, Malema, Rutile and Bonthe Divisions.

 

Eastern Region

  • Kenema, Tongo, Daru, Kailahun, Koindu, Motema and Tankoro Divisions.

 

North West Region

  • Portloko, Kambia, Lunsar, Masiaka, and Lungi Divisions.

 

North East Region

  • Makeni, Magburaka, Kamakwie, Kabala, Panlap, Mile 91 and Mongo Divisions.

 

The SLP functions with joint-up leadership approach with the Executive Management Board (EMB) as the main strategic management tool.
